Compare country levels and changes using the same years and one shared vertical scale across all six panels.

Basic drinking water: six country pathsThe percentage of people using at least basic water services. This indicator encompasses both people using basic water services as well as those using safely managed water services. Basic drinking water services is defined as drinking water from an improved source, provided collection time is not more than 30 minutes for a round trip. Improved water sources include piped water, boreholes or tubewells, protected dug wells, protected springs, and packaged or delivered water. Eleven annual positions; shared linear axis 0–100 % of population. Editorial country selection: United States, China, India, Germany, Brazil, South Africa. Prefer this stated comparison group; require at least two present observations per panel, then use reporting-code order for any remaining places. Missing observations break lines. No interpolation, smoothing, individual rescaling or indexed growth.WORLD SIGNAL MONITOR / VISUAL STORIESBasic drinking water: six country pathsSix economies · 2014–2024 · % of populationUnited States0501002014: 99.3476415086967 % of population2015: 99.4293350987693 % of population2016: 99.509898178586 % of population2017: 99.5893429085867 % of population2018: 99.6675822614626 % of population2019: 99.7446316773149 % of population2020: 99.8204204612721 % of population2021: 99.894943997231 % of population2022: 99.9641146737575 % of population2023: 99.9804979047021 % of population2024: 99.9804443465812 % of population20142024China0501002014: 90.9415850511528 % of population2015: 91.5125864728114 % of population2016: 92.0580332231986 % of population2017: 92.577308673558 % of population2018: 93.068663255545 % of population2019: 93.5326999183951 % of population2020: 93.9705270769772 % of population2021: 94.6329735273297 % of population2022: 95.4385845932759 % of population2023: 96.0883413082236 % of population2024: 96.1224151867516 % of population20142024India0501002014: 89.0593975763785 % of population2015: 89.7387066732488 % of population2016: 90.4158282525921 % of population2017: 91.0905825625786 % of population2018: 91.7626505318817 % of population2019: 92.4317828217009 % of population2020: 93.0977309081783 % of population2021: 93.760281159736 % of population2022: 94.4191311935781 % of population2023: 95.0740565981493 % of population2024: 95.7247373523918 % of population20142024Germany0501002014: 100 % of population2015: 100 % of population2016: 99.9999994713636 % of population2017: 100 % of population2018: 100 % of population2019: 99.9999994577197 % of population2020: 99.9999988416059 % of population2021: 99.9999988425523 % of population2022: 99.9999971569363 % of population2023: 99.9999970615884 % of population2024: 100 % of population20142024Brazil0501002014: 97.4719067025274 % of population2015: 97.7078492139171 % of population2016: 97.921760549945 % of population2017: 98.1978808317894 % of population2018: 98.5580120515387 % of population2019: 98.773134154073 % of population2020: 99.0720677672897 % of population2021: 99.4272648803619 % of population2022: 99.6149419025106 % of population2023: 99.8980595100623 % of population2024: 99.9999987323028 % of population20142024South Africa0501002014: 92.4843371456174 % of population2015: 92.2766813341795 % of population2016: 92.0633898282653 % of population2017: 91.844654961916 % of population2018: 91.6208678269317 % of population2019: 91.3923995625225 % of population2020: 91.1598368082793 % of population2021: 90.9231026021655 % of population2022: 90.6825361107103 % of population2023: 90.4386965804708 % of population2024: 90.1916801364739 % of population20142024Same years and scale in every panel · Missing observations break lines · No smoothingSources: World Bank WDI2014–2024

How to read this diagram

The percentage of people using at least basic water services. No interpolation, smoothing, individual rescaling or indexed growth.

202 of 214 retained reporting economies have values in 2024; coverage is not a complete world ranking. Highest does not imply best.

At least basic means an improved source with a collection round trip of at most 30 minutes. This differs from safely managed drinking water and does not by itself establish water safety.

Annual 2000–2025 selection. Source estimates and historical values may be revised; unavailable values remain missing.

Source notes and numeric strings remain unchanged in downloads. The latest retained reporting year can differ across datasets.

This is an editorial comparison group, not a world ranking. The table retains all annual positions, including missing data.
